If you've recently lost motivation to start or to continue losing weight, I'm sorry to hear that.
But don't beat yourself about it.
It's normal.
How normal?
Google has 26,300,000 results for the question, "How to stay motivated to lose weight?"
There are a lot of answers because it's normal to want to lose weight so badly, that it's all you think about on and off through the day.
But you just can't seem to get motivated to start or you might feel motivated, say in the new year or before a holiday, and then you fall off track and motivation just disappears.
If you could talk to your motivation you'd be desperately saying...
Lol. Yes, we must always find humour in our struggles. It's the best way to live.
Many people believe that they need to feel motivated before taking action towards any goal, but the reality is that motivation often comes and goes for everyone, often influenced by external factors, such as stress, anxiety, depression or other life events.
The key is to not rely solely on motivation to drive our behaviour, but instead to create systems and habits that support our goals, regardless of how motivated we feel.
Here are 5 tips to get you back on track with your weight loss goals:
Set realistic and achievable goals: Setting realistic and achievable weight loss goals can help you keep going throughout your weight loss journey. Break down your overall goal into smaller milestones, and celebrate each milestone as you achieve it. For example, you may want to set a goal to lose 5 pounds in a week but only lose 2 lbs and feel disappointed and like you failed, but this is because you gave yourself an unrealistic goal and expectation. You should celebrate ANY weekly loss. A more realistic weekly goal for sustainable weight loss is 0.5 to 2 lbs a week, so celebrate any loss above 0.5 lbs because, remember, the slower the better as more sustainable! Patience is your secret weapon.
Find a support system: Surround yourself with people who support your weight loss goals. Enlist a friend or family member to be your accountability partner, or hire a Weight Loss Coach to help keep you motivated and on track.
Focus on the benefits: Instead of just focusing on the number on the scale (this is important but only a measurement tool to know if you're creating the desired calorie deficit), focus on the benefits of losing weight. Think about how losing weight can improve your health, boost your energy levels, and enhance your quality of life. This is where writing your WHY weight loss is important to you statement is a key motivator.
Reward yourself: Reward yourself for achieving your weight loss goals, but never with food. Treat yourself to a massage, new workout clothes, or a weekend getaway to celebrate your progress.
Keep track of your progress: Keeping track of your progress can help you stay motivated. Use a weight loss tracker app or a journal to record your weight, monthly measurements, and other important metrics. Seeing progress can help you stay motivated and continue to make healthy choices.
